FROM RICHES TO RAGS

Updated: Aug 3, 2020

šŸ’ŽMany of us have heard the saying ā€˜From Rags to Riches’. Rags to riches basically refers to any situation in which a person rises from poverty to wealth, or in some cases from being a unknown to famous. As I began to think about the awesomeness of God and how He has chosen the foolish and weak things to confound the wise and mighty (1 Corinthians 1:27), I realized how He often works in reverse.

šŸ’ŽYou see, God is well able to bring us from the bottom of life to the top but His lesson and our growth is undoubtedly in bringing us from height of pride to the low of humility. When we have arrived or have achieved a certain status in life we can forget the pain and the struggle that we went through to get there. We can forget that if it had not been for the Lord who led us and guided us out of darkness (1Peter 2:9) we would not be where we are.

šŸ’ŽGod’s desire is not harm us (Jeremiah 29:11) but it is help us to bring glory to His name and become a beacon of light to those who do not know Him. The question is will we be like the man who when asked to give up his all to follow Christ went away sad because of his many possessions (Matthew 19:21-22)? Or will we be like the elderly woman who gave her last few pennies into an offering because what she received was far greater (Matthew 12:41-44)?

šŸ’ŽI’m not suggesting we have to be broke to demonstrate our love for God but we do need to be broken so that we remain humble in thought, heart and deed. If we die daily to self there will be little need for the Lord to bring us from riches to rags. Let us be willing to take up the towel before the title and be okay if no one ever calls our name. In due season, the Lord will turn our rags to riches because we will have the character and integrity to walk in it humbly giving Him glory for it all!
